What Tappy Does

Tappy turns taps on your Mac into actions. On a MacBook it reads the built-in motion sensor, so it feels the knock through the case. There is no microphone involved and nothing is ever listened to or recorded. On a Mac without that sensor, Tappy counts taps on the trackpad instead.

Data Collection

Tappy does not collect, transmit or store any personal data. We don't use analytics, tracking pixels, crash reporters, or third-party SDKs that phone home.

Checking For Updates

This is the only network request Tappy makes. Once a day it asks GitHub for the version number of the newest release, and downloads that release only if you choose to install it. Nothing about you is sent with the request — no identifier, no usage data, no knock patterns. As with any request to any website, GitHub can see the IP address it came from.

You can switch this off in Settings → Updates. With it off, Tappy makes no network requests at all unless you press Check Now yourself.

Local Processing

All knock detection and every action runs entirely on your Mac. Sensor readings, your tap patterns and the timing between them exist in memory only while a knock is being matched, and are never written to disk, uploaded or shared.

Preferences

Your knocks, the actions you assign and your settings are stored locally on your device. They are never uploaded or synced to any server.

Accessibility Access

Some actions — Copy, Paste, Screenshot, Spotlight, switching tabs — work by pressing keys for you, and macOS only allows that with Accessibility access. Tappy asks the first time you use one of them, never at launch, and never at all if you don't use them.

That access is used only to send the keystrokes for the action you chose. Tappy does not read your keyboard input, monitor what you type, or observe the contents of any other app.

Shortcuts & Custom Commands

If you assign Run Shortcut or Run Custom Command, Tappy runs exactly what you configured, under your own user account, when that knock fires. Tappy neither inspects nor transmits what you put there — but what it does is entirely up to what you wrote.

Purchases

There aren't any. Tappy is free, with no licence keys, no subscription and no in-app purchases, so it never handles or stores payment information of any kind.
