Through the motion sensor built into every MacBook — it feels the knock in the case rather than hearing it. No microphone, so nothing is listened to or recorded. On a desktop Mac, which has no such sensor, Tappy counts taps on the trackpad instead.
Only for the actions that press keys for you — Copy, Paste, Screenshot, Spotlight, switching tabs. Those need Accessibility access, and Tappy asks the first time you use one, not at launch. Opening apps, changing volume and the screen effects need nothing.
